Parish pump
Parish pump See you on Easter Monday? If you’re in Woodbridge town centre on Easter Monday why not pay a visit to St Mary’s? After the usual busy programme of Easter services and contemplation, there will be a special Open Day at the church with refreshments, music, a warm welcome and the beauty of the building itself on offer to members of the public throughout the day. If you’ve never been inside the church before, members of the congregation will be on hand to show you around and explain something of why St Mary’s has been at the heart of its local community for more than 600 years. There will also be a reminder that while Sunday services are a central part of church life so are the weddings, christenings, funerals, concerts and other events which take place in the church throughout the year. There is one ulterior motive for all this hospitality. The church is in need of funds to pay for urgently needed repairs to the tower roof and other areas. If you value the beauty of the building alone, come and find out more... Into the future I suspect that our predecessors would have been horrified at the investment needed by our own generation to maintain the building so care- fully and lovingly built in the fifteenth century. Perhaps it was never a thought that, in a century beyond their immediate imagining, we would be trying our best to preserve the stone and flint, and worrying about how we can effectively do it. But we are, and it’s going to be a tough job during the next eighteen months find- ing the financial resources to meet the demands of architect and builder. We need to prevent more serious deterioration to the external walls and the tower. Over the next few months we shall be aiming to substantially increase our building fund to meet the bill. I hope you, and the whole community will feel able, and feel it right, to support us. We will be very grateful. Kevan McCormack
