Rowe on show in Woodbridge Former St Mary’s curate Reverend Eric Charlesworth is putting on an exhibition of paintings by the artist George James Rowe (1807-1883) from June 22-29. Rowe was influenced by Gainsborough, Constable, Crome, Turner and the Dutch masters and encouraged by Ruskin who took him to copy old Masters at the National Gallery. On Rowe’s death his sister gave a large number of his paintings to the Putnam Natural Museum in Davenport, Iowa. Rev Charlesworth was keen to make the forgotten artist better known and persuaded the museum to sell the paintings. The exhibition is well worth a visit.
