Mothers’ Union: Christian Care for Families St Mary’s Branch began 2014 with a superb lunch cooked by one of our members, and entertainment which was well received. At our February meeting, we had two things to celebrate: the Rector’s birthday and Mavis and Frank Proctor’s 60th Wedding Anniversary (pictured). Mavis, a MU member for over 40 years, spoke of her appreciation of both the friendship and fellowship. We were also sad to hear that Elsie Hodgkinson had died, a member for almost 70 years. This year’s programme has included a talk by the Senior Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths, and a Service for Lady Day at St John’s Ipswich; on 10 April there will be an afternoon of Reflections for Lent, led by Canon Penny Brown. We also continue with the following community projects: ? Woolly hats for Seafarers – they like a new hat when they come into port. ? Toiletries for the Women’s Refuge and clothing for the Umbrella Trust. ? Joan Watkins has made several ‘A Cross in my Pocket’ sets to raise funds. ? Funds have been raised for the Away from it All Holiday Scheme, organised by the MU in the diocese. Last year, four families benefited from a holiday, and a pamper day was given to a young mother. The Mothers’ Union is a Christian international family charity with over 4 million members, dedicated to promoting marriage and family life. It believes that family wellbeing cannot be separated from the welfare of the wider community, and undertakes ground-breaking community work in 83 countries. We are proud to have a tiny say in government policy through Faith and Policy Watch, a government initiative inviting each branch to discuss family issues, such as the early sexualisation of children, or same-sex marriage. All branch reports go to MU Head Office, to be combined and presented to the government. Our noticeboard in church gives details. Our branch has recently welcomed three new members, and always welcomes more.
