Let’s meditate!
11 Let’s meditate! Stella Durand, a parish priest and mother of four, regularly leads Christian meditations for children in her local school. This is how she goes about it: To introduce meditations to the children, I make the first session a silence game. I ask them to sit still and listen to whatever sounds are round about and then tell me what they have heard. This helps to prepare them for the silence. Then I say: Sit up straight with your backs against the back of the chair, with your feet flat on the floor. Now close your eyes and take a deep breath. Let it out and relax as you do so. Now another deep breath ... relax. Today we are doing the Sunbathing Prayer. Imagine you are sitting comfortably in the sun. God's love for us is like the sun, Bask in the warmth. Other themes I have used: • Imagining that the wind is the Holy Spirit and we are a dead leaf being blown around and lifted up by the Spirit. • Imagining that we are plunging into a warm swimming pool. • Yet another one is experiencing the hug of God, and another is being enveloped in a cloud. • Sometimes I bring in a dried-up sponge cloth and a bowl of water and show how the water brings the sponge to life. To finish, I say: Gently wiggle your fingers and toes; and open your eyes when you’re ready. The whole meditation lasts for about a minute-and-a-half. Stella Durand
