17 CD Choice Will Todd – Mass in Blue Signum Classics (SIGCD083) www.willtodd.com In no hurry to leave London a while ago, I wandered into St Martin-in-the-Fields – and was taken aback by the sound of some extraordinary music. A rehearsal was in progress. What joy! The music was vibrant and exciting, and I just sat and listened for the short time I had. On enquiry, I found that I’d been listening to Will Todd’s Mass in Blue. Mass in Blue, originally entitled Jazz Mass, combines Todd’s love of jazz and his extensive experience in the world of choral music, initially nurtured in his youth while singing as a treble in his church choir. I now have a recording of the work, sung by the Vasari Singers under Jeremy Backhouse, with Will Todd (piano) and his wife Bethany Halliday (soprano). The contrast between the exuberance of the music as, say, at the end of the Credo and the following reflective mood in the very beautiful Sanctus, makes, for me, very poignant listening. The CD also includes eight anthems, each lasting three or four minutes, from Todd’s large body of smaller-scale works. Attractive and varied, they make a suitable accompaniment to the Mass on this CD. I have just to make mention of the setting of G K Chesterton’s poem, ‘The Christ Child’ – so simple, so lovely. Todd, I discovered, was also the young composer commissioned to write The Call of Wisdom, the anthem sung by children at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Service in St Paul’s Cathedral. This has been recorded elsewhere. Mary Blyton We hope to have Will Todd’s Mass in Blue (SIGCD083) on sale in St Mary’s Shop
