Happy birthday!
The Mothers’ Union was founded by Mary Sumner in 1876. To mark the 140th anniversary, St Mary’s MU led the congregation in celebrations on 7 August, the nearest Sunday to Mary Sumner Day, 9 August. As well as producing an article for the pew-sheet, our members read the lessons, led the prayers and paraded the banner. In the sermon slot we enacted an interview with ‘Mary Sumner’, represented by one of our members, who was suitably dressed in period costume. We added to this set-piece by having our interviewer speak to Margaret Lowe, our Branch Leader, telling the congregation how things had moved on from 1876 and what we do now, in 2016. Afterwards, everyone was invited to celebrate with us in St Mary’s Church Centre, where we provided a cake (pictured) to accompany the usual coffee. Our noticeboard in church had a poster showing all the things that MU helps with and was also decorated with MU celebratory balloons. On Mary Sumner Day itself a party of us went to Palgrave, where we joined their MU members in a service and were given a splendid tea afterwards. It was lovely to meet up with another branch. Our programme for the rest of the year …  Thursday 10 November 2.30 pm ‘The Work of the British Legion’ – A talk by Mandi Cox-Osborne, Suffolk Community Fundraiser for the Royal British Legion.  Thursday 8 December 2.30 pm Christmas Carols and Readings – We look forward to being joined by other Deanery members for this event. Our 2017 programme will be published towards the end of this year. Meetings are held in St Mary’s Church Centre and everyone is welcome to join us.
