Thanks for the legacy!
Thanks for the legacy! St Mary’s Church building has benefited from numerous legacies over the years and is about to do so again – this time via the Friends of St Mary’s. A highlight for the Friends over the past year has been the news that we are to receive around £30,000 in the will of a very generous parishioner. This money will come to us on the completion of probate and we will be able to pass it over to the PCC to deposit in the dedicated fabric fund account. Hurrah! Having a dedicated fabric fund account, we believe, will encourage more people to remember the church building in the future. Another good year It has been another good year for Friends’ fundraising, with just under £15,000 coming in from member subscriptions, donations and events. A big thank you to all our supporters as we prepare to hand over another cheque at the Friends AGM on 29 March (details below). Highlights on the events side have included another fantastic concert by the Riverside 100 choir – our record fundraiser which raised over £1,600. The Annual Prom, the wine-tasting and ‘Tea and Jazz’ with Joyspring (pictured) also helped to boost the coffers. If you have an idea for an event in church – somebody suggested an exhibition of wedding dresses! – do let us know. It’s about fundraising and getting new people into our beautiful church building. Our membership continues to creep up and we welcome anyone who wants to preserve and protect the church building. Work on the North Porch, we understand, is still imminent, and there are other projects in the pipeline. Watch this space! A talk by Richard Noble Please note that this year’s AGM, on 29 March, starts at 6.00 p.m. for those who want to go on to the Lent Talk at 7.30 p.m. Please join us for refreshments and to hear our guest speaker Richard Noble, author of The Writing on the Wall (see p.20) Nick Cottam
