Spring is in the air, which can only mean one thing: it’s time for the OK Chorale’s annual concert at St Mary’s, an evening of warm, soulful harmonies and exuberant rhythms, with songs of peace and joy from around the world. The concert starts at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday 1 April. Tickets £6 (£3 under 16s). All profits to the charity WaterAid (improving access to safe water and sanitation). The OK Chorale was formed in January 2011 by Chris Rowbury, when more people than expected squeezed themselves into a room at Woodbridge Community Hall. The room was far too small to fit the 100 who turned up! Since then, the group has settled down to a more manageable size with a waiting list for new singers who join each September. With a unique repertoire of songs from across the globe (all in the original languages), the OK Chorale is open to anyone who loves to sing. There are no auditions and no need to read music, since everything is taught by ear. Yet they perform to a very high standard and make an amazing sound. The OK Chorale are delighted to be joined for the second year running by Heartbeat, formed 25 years ago to give women in the Halesworth area the opportunity to sing together. The fifteen-strong Heartbeat perform regularly and have a wide repertoire of world music and contemporary songs. Expect a rousing English Easter carol, haunting Scottish folk, a Moravian lullaby, infectious African rhythms, African-American gospel, and much more in a vibrant celebration of harmony singing, and not an instrument or backing track in sight!
