(... continued) Taking the plunge with Baptism

May we have a private service for baptism?
Yes, and a church member will usually be there to represent the Christian community. But it is more logical to have this ceremony during the main Sunday service so that new parents and godparents can feel supported: talk to the Rector.
What is the right age for baptism?
Any age. When teenagers and adults are baptised it is often followed by formal Confirmation by the Bishop.
What is the role of godparents?
Godparents make the same promises on behalf of the child being baptised as the parents. That means prayer and support for the child and helping the parents bring up the child in the Christian faith. It is traditional to have at least three god-parents: two of the same sex as the child and one of the opposite sex, but this is not prescriptive.
I'm not a regular churchgoer. May I still have my child baptised?
Certainly; Christians believe that God's love is available to all. Talk to the Rector about the options.
What does it cost?
The Baptism service is free.

Flying the flag!

Have you seen the new St Mary's Church flag? Its blue "AMR" motif and bright yellow background can be seen flying above the church tower from various parts of the Market Square and beyond, thanks to Theos, a St Mary's young discussion group, who raised £195.86 to cover replacement. Theos members Martha Coombs, Jess Excell, Sophie O'Brien, Olivia Mansfield and Hannah Robinson raised the money by inviting members of the congregation to help make a coin trail in the porch after church services. According to Rector Kevan, the average lifespan of a St Mary's flag is no more than a few months. Because of the pounding it gets from the weather - even in summer - the current flag will probably need replacing in September. Thankfully, the money for the next flag is already in the kitty.
