Sidesmen/women

The sidemen/women comprise a team of 31 with three reserves, with a balance of gender slightly towards male. Many sidesmen are assigned particular services in the month, which aids continuity and underpins reliability.

The framework of the duties of the sidesmen is set out below:-

• When no bell ringer is present, to toll the bell for a short period before the service.
• To give out the books and hearing aids.
• To take up the Offertory.
• To toll the bell at the Consecration.
• To arrange hymn boards.
• To tidy up the church after services, including kneelers and books.

As well as contributing to the smooth working of the arrangements for seating and movement in the church, the sidesmen/women play a vital role in providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere as the congregation arrives. For more information contact the Parish Office.
